uplifting thoughts and inspiration on faith

Body, Soul, and Spirit

Genesis 2:7    Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath or spirit of life, and man became a living being.

Ecclesiastes 12:7    And the dust returneth to the earth as it was, And the spirit returneth to God who gave it.

Isaiah 42:5    Thus said God, Jehovah, preparing The heavens, and stretching them out, Spreading out the earth and its productions, Giving breath to the people on it, And spirit to those walking in it.

Spirit Soul Body

Perception is Reality, or is it?

How the Body Deceives Us.

The Five Senses What the Body Can Perceive

The human body is designed to believe and understand what the brain processes.  There are only five ways the body can receive information:

  1. What it can touch and feel with the skin
  2. What it can see with the eyes
  3. What it can taste with the tongue and the mouth
  4. What it can smell with the nose
  5. What it can hear with the ears

We are deceived regularly by our five senses.  As a society we acknowledge it and utilize trusty maxims to remind us of it daily.  Have you ever heard or used the phrase, “Never judge a book by its cover”?

Paperwhites

Paperwhites are beautiful flowers but their smell disappoints.  Not very pleasant.   You can’t judge these by what you typically expect from such a beautiful plant.

Our eyes fool us regularly as is evidenced by these common optical illusions:

The Ponzo Illusion

The Ponzo Illusion

In the Ponzo illusion, two identically sized lines appear to be different sizes when placed over parallel lines that seem to converge as they recede into the distance.  The reason the top horizontal line looks longer is because we interpret the scene using linear perspective. Since the vertical parallel lines seem to grow closer as they move further away, we interpret the top line as being further off in the distance. An object in the distance would need to be longer in order for it to appear the same size as a near object, so the top “far” line is seen as being longer than the bottom “near” line, even though they are the same size.

Simultaneous Contrast Illusion

Simultaneous Contrast Illusion

The horizontal gray bar is the same shade throughout.  Perceptual constancies are sources of illusions. Colour constancy and brightness constancy are responsible for the fact that a familiar object will appear the same colour regardless of the amount of light or colour of light reflecting from it. An illusion of colour or contrast difference can be created when the luminosity or colour of the area surrounding an unfamiliar object is changed. The contrast of the object will appear darker against a black field that reflects less light compared to a white field even though the object itself did not change in colour.

The Bezold Effect

The Bezold Effect

The Bezold Effect, also referred to as the “assimilation effect,” is an optical illusion where a color’s hue or value is affected by the color or colors surrounding it. A color may appear different depending on its relation to adjacent colors.

Wavy Lines Illusion

Wavy Lines Illusion

Are these lines straight and parallel?  A straight edge would prove to your mind that they are perfectly straight.  There are no curved lines in this figure. You can use a ruler to check it out. The diagonal patterns created by the tiny squares distort the perception of the picture.

So what is the spiritual connection?

Paul tried diligently to explain this concept to the first century Christians.  Yes, we are human.  Yes, we have no choice but to exist in this world in our earthly, human, flesh and blood, flawed bodies.  However, we do have the choice to align our thoughts and our thinking with the thoughts and thinking of God.  In fact, we are advised to do just that.

Proverbs 3:5-6  Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

How can we do this?  Through the Holy Spirit.

When the Holy Spirit dwells within us we can get in sync with the Truth of Who God Is and who God intends for each of us to be.  Paul says we do this through the constant renewing of our minds.

Romans 8:1-17
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.  For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.

Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.  And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”  The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

Romans 12:2  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

What does renewing the mind have to do with anything?  And exactly how do you renew your mind?

What the Body / Flesh Says

What the Spirit of Truth Says

I am sick. How do I know I am sick?

  • I don’t FEEL well
  • The Doctor can SEE signs, symptoms, and test results
Isaiah 53:5  But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
I have lack. I can’t pay my bills.I don’t have enough.

  • I HEAR the phone ringing and it’s another creditor
  • I SEE the pile of bills stacking up
  • I SEE how little is in my bank account
Philippians 4:19  And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
I am weak.

  • My BODY is exhausted
  • My BRAIN is overwhelmed
2 Corinthians 12:9-11  But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
I am afraid.

  • All of my SENSES are telling me DANGER!
Psalm 73:26  My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
I can’t.

  • My BRAIN has reasoned, based on the input from my BODY and my SENSES that I do not have what it takes to go any further.
Isaiah 40:28-31  Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.  He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength.  Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

The Spirit is in perfect alignment with the Word of God.  By renewing our minds daily as an ongoing habit we make a conscious decision to get in alignment with the Word of God.  If the Spirit of Truth is living in us and is aligned with the Word of God and we are making an ongoing daily decision to also come into alignment with what the Word of God says and not what our physical bodies, our five senses, or any other source is telling us, then we become one with the Spirit.

Our spirit unites in perfect harmony and unison with the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, which is the Spirit of God.  The Holy Spirit is then able to guide us in the Truth, Comfort us, and through us produce the Fruit of the Spirit.

The production of the Fruit of the Spirit is our mission here on earth.

The Fruit of the Spirit

The Fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 5:22-23  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
