Yield Yourselves to the Lord and He Will Relent

Jonah 3:10

Relent:  to change one’s mind about some decided course, especially a harsh one; become more mild or amenable;  to soften in feeling, temper, or determination; become more mild, compassionate, or forgiving;  to become less severe;

The word relent is found predominantly in the Old Testament and more often than not it’s the same story over and over. The people have turned away from God.   God sends a message saying if they will get their act together He will not do whatever terrible thing He really should do to them.

God called the children of Israel a Stiff-necked People.

Exodus 32:9   And the LORD said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people!

Stiff-necked means obstinate.

Obstinate:   firmly or stubbornly adhering to one’s purpose or opinion;

not yielding to argument, persuasion, or entreaty;

characterized by inflexible persistence or an unyielding attitude;

inflexibly persisted in or carried out;  not easily controlled or overcome

Exodus 33:3   Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.”

Exodus 33:5   For the LORD had said to Moses, “Say to the children of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. I could come up into your midst in one moment and consume you. Now therefore, take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do to you.’”

Exodus 34:9   Then he said, “If now I have found grace in Your sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray, go among us, even though we are a stiff-necked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us as Your inheritance.”

Deuteronomy 9:6  Therefore understand that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.

Deuteronomy 9:13“Furthermore the LORD spoke to me, saying, ‘I have seen this people, and indeed they are a stiff-necked people.

Deuteronomy 10:16   Therefore circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be stiff-necked no longer.

2 Chronicles 30:8   Now do not be stiff-necked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves to the LORD; and enter His sanctuary, which He has sanctified forever, and serve the LORD your God, that the fierceness of His wrath may turn away from you.

Acts 7:51   [ Israel Resists the Holy Spirit ] “You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.

The never ending cycle of the children of Israel

God's Cycle of Relent

Exodus 32:14So the LORD relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.

2 Samuel 24:16   And when the angel stretched out His hand over Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD relented from the destruction, and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “It is enough; now restrain your hand.” And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

1 Chronicles 21:15   And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was destroying, the LORD looked and relented of the disaster, and said to the angel who was destroying, “It is enough; now restrain your hand.” And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

Psalm 106:45   And for their sake He remembered His covenant, And relented according to the multitude of His mercies.

Even God gets tired of the cycle

Jeremiah 15:6You have forsaken Me,” says the LORD, “You have gone backward. Therefore I will stretch out My hand against you and destroy you; I am weary of relenting!

Jeremiah 18:8   if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it.

Jeremiah 26:3Perhaps everyone will listen and turn from his evil way, that I may relent concerning the calamity which I purpose to bring on them because of the evil of their doings.’

Jeremiah 26:13   Now therefore, amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God; then the LORD will relent concerning the doom that He has pronounced against you.

Jeremiah 26:19   Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah ever put him to death? Did he not fear the LORD and seek the LORD’s favor? And the LORD relented concerning the doom which He had pronounced against them. But we are doing great evil against ourselves.”

Jeremiah 42:10   ‘If you will still remain in this land, then I will build you and not pull you down, and I will plant you and not pluck you up. For I relent concerning the disaster that I have brought upon you.

Joel 2:13   So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the LORD your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm.

Amos 7:3   So the LORD relented concerning this. “It shall not be,” said the LORD.

Amos 7:6   So the LORD relented concerning this. “This also shall not be,” said the Lord GOD.

Jonah 3:9   Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish?

Jonah 3:1   Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.

Jonah 4:2   So he prayed to the LORD, and said, “Ah, LORD, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish;

for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm.
