In All Things Give Thanks to God

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18    Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Genesis 14:22-23

Genesis 14:14-24
When Abram heard that his relative (Lot) had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained men born in his household and went in pursuit as far as Dan.  During the night Abram divided his men to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.  He recovered all the goods and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people who had been captured.

After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine.  He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
Creator of heaven and earth.
And praise be to God Most High,
who delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself.”

But Abram said to the king of Sodom,

“With raised hand I have sworn an oath to the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, that I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre. Let them have their share.”

Wow.  Not even a thread or the strap of a sandal.  Now that’s dedication.  That is loyalty.  That is allegiance.  It was tradition in those days that if you defeated an enemy you kept the spoils as treasure, reward.

But Abram was a man of honor and he was faithful to God.

Not only did he know God would provide for him anything he needed but he had already been extremely blessed by the LORD.  Abram didn’t even want to remotely look like any of his blessings came from anyone or anything besides God Himself.

Dear gracious heavenly Father,

Help us to remember that by You everything that is was created and in You everything is held together.  We are Your children and You love us so much.  Lord, remind us to keep our eyes on You and to come to You with every thought, every care, concern, anxiety, and need and to lay them at Your feet.

Your Word promises us over and over that You will supply all we need.  You see us.  You know us.  You love us.  You are acutely aware of everything that touches our lives both good and bad.  Lord help us as we grow in the knowledge of you.  We are weak but You are strong.  We are human and frail but You are God from everlasting to everlasting and nothing is too hard for You.  Lord help us to, like Abram, be men and women of honor and be faithful to You.

May we continuously remember to give You the thanks, the praise, the honor, and the glory for every good thing.  Strengthen us each day to keep our eyes on You, be ever aware of You, looking and listening for Your direction lest we miss a blessing you intended for us because we were so caught up in ourselves.

In Jesus name we pray.  Amen
