Step 9 Patience Is A Virtue

Psalm 27:14

Patience: the bearing of provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain, without complaint, loss of temper, irritation, or the like. An ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay. Quiet, steady perseverance; even-tempered care; diligence.
Synonyms: Stability.  Endurance. Qualities of calmness. Persistent courage in trying circumstances. Fortitude implies not only patience but courage and strength of character in the midst of pain, affliction, or hardship.
Wait: to remain inactive or in a state of repose, as until something expected happens; to be available or in readiness; to look forward to eagerly; to stay in one place or remain inactive in expectation (of something); hold oneself in readiness (for something); to delay temporarily or be temporarily delayed; Wait usually implies staying for a limited time and for a definite purpose, that is, for something expected
Expect: to look forward to; regard as likely to happen; anticipate the occurrence or the coming of; to look for with reason or justification
Synonyms: Hope. Expect implies confidently believing, usually for good reasons, that an event will occur. Anticipate is to look forward to an event and even to picture it. Hope implies a wish that an event may take place and an expectation that it will. Await (wait for) implies being alert and ready.

Noah and his family had to wait for the earth to be ready for them leave the ark:

Genesis 8:10   And he waited yet another seven days, and again he sent the dove out from the ark.

Genesis 8:12   So he waited yet another seven days and sent out the dove, which did not return again to him anymore.

Genesis 49:18   I have waited for your salvation, O LORD!

When you don’t wait on the Lord and His instructions this is what happens:

Exodus 12:39   And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they had brought out of Egypt; for it was not leavened, because they were driven out of Egypt and could not wait, nor had they prepared provisions for themselves.

The children of Israel could not wait for their dough to rise so they had to eat an unfinished product.  Did it suffice?  Yes.  Was it the best bread can be?  No.

King Saul was told to WAIT.  He chose not to and his kingdom was taken from him.

1 Samuel 10:8   You shall go down before me to Gilgal; and surely I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and make sacrifices of peace offerings. Seven days you shall wait, till I come to you and show you what you should do.”

1 Samuel 13:7-14   As for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.  Then he waited seven days, according to the time set by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal;  and the people were scattered from him.  So Saul said, “Bring a burnt offering and peace offerings here to me.” And he offered the burnt offering.  Now it happened, as soon as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, that Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him.

And Samuel said, “What have you done?”

Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered together at Michmash, then I said, ‘The Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the Lord.’ Therefore I felt compelled, and offered a burnt offering.”

And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.  But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”

Job 35:14   Although you say you do not see Him,Yet justice is before Him, and you must wait for Him.

Psalm 25:3   Indeed, let no one who waits on You be ashamed; Let those be ashamed who deal treacherously without cause.

Psalm 25:5   Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day.

Psalm 25:21   Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, For I wait for You.

Psalm 27:14   Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!

Psalm 33:20   Our soul waits for the LORD; He is our help and our shield.

Psalm 37:7   Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.

Psalm 37:9   For evildoers shall be cut off; But those who wait on the LORD, They shall inherit the earth.

Psalm 37:34   Wait on the LORD, And keep His way, And He shall exalt you to inherit the land; When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.

Psalm 39:7  And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.

Psalm 40:1  [Faith Persevering in Trial] I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry.

Psalm 52:9   I will praise You forever, Because You have done it; And in the presence of Your saints I will wait on Your name, for it is good.

Psalm 59:9   I will wait for You, O You his Strength; For God is my defense.

Psalm 62:1   [ A Calm Resolve to Wait for the Salvation of God ] Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation.

Psalm 62:5   My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him.

Psalm 69:3   I am weary with my crying; My throat is dry; My eyes fail while I wait for my God.

Psalm 69:6   Let not those who wait for You, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed because of me; Let not those who seek You be confounded because of me, O God of Israel.

Psalm 130:5   I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, And in His word I do hope.

Psalm 130:6   My soul waits for the Lord More than those who watch for the morning— Yes, more than those who watch for the morning.

Proverbs 8:34   Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors.

Proverbs 20:22    Do not say, “I will recompense evil”; Wait for the LORD, and He will save you.

Proverbs 27:18   Whoever keeps the fig tree will eat its fruit; So he who waits on his master will be honored.

Isaiah 8:17  And I will wait on the LORD, Who hides His face from the house of Jacob;And I will hope in Him.

Isaiah 25:9   And it will be said in that day: “Behold, this is our God; We have waited for Him, and He will save us. This is the LORD; We have waited for Him; We will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.”

Isaiah 26:8   Yes, in the way of Your judgments, O LORD, we have waited for You; The desire of our soul is for Your name And for the remembrance of You.

Isaiah 30:18   [ God Will Be Gracious ] Therefore the LORD will wait, that He may be gracious to you; And therefore He will be exalted, that He may have mercy on you. For the LORD is a God of justice; Blessed are all those who wait for Him.

Isaiah 33:2   O LORD, be gracious to us; We have waited for You. Be their arm every morning, Our salvation also in the time of trouble.

Isaiah 40:31   But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 42:4   He will not fail nor be discouraged, Till He has established justice in the earth; And the coastlands shall wait for His law.”

Isaiah 49:23   Kings shall be your foster fathers, And their queens your nursing mothers; They shall bow down to you with their faces to the earth, And lick up the dust of your feet. Then you will know that I am the LORD, For they shall not be ashamed who wait for Me.”

Isaiah 64:4   For since the beginning of the world Men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, Nor has the eye seen any God besides You, Who acts for the one who waits for Him.

Jeremiah 14:22   Are there any among the idols of the nations that can cause rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Are You not He, O LORD our God? Therefore we will wait for You, Since You have made all these.

Lamentations 3:25   The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him.

Lamentations 3:26   It is good that one should hope and wait quietly For the salvation of the LORD.

Hosea 12:6   So you, by the help of your God, return; Observe mercy and justice, And wait on your God continually.

Micah 7:7   Therefore I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation; My God will hear me.

Habakkuk 2:3   For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry.

Zephaniah 3:8   [ A Faithful Remnant ] “Therefore wait for Me,” says the LORD, “Until the day I rise up for plunder; My determination is to gather the nations To My assembly of kingdoms, To pour on them My indignation, All My fierce anger; All the earth shall be devoured With the fire of My jealousy.

Luke 12:36  and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately.

Acts 1:4   [ The Holy Spirit Promised ] And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to  wait for the Promise of the Father , “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me;

Romans 8:19   For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.

Romans 8:23   Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.

Romans 8:25   But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.

Galatians 5:5   For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.

Philippians 3:20   For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ

1 Thessalonians 1:10   and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

Hebrews 9:28   so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

James 5:7   [ Be Patient and Persevering ] Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain.

Luke 8:15     But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience

Luke 21:19   By your patience possess your souls.

Romans 15:4   For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.

Romans 15:5   Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus

Colossians 1:10-12   that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;  strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and long-suffering with joy;  giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

2 Thessalonians 1:3-5   We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, so that we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure,  which is manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer;

2 Thessalonians 3:5   Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.

1 Timothy 6:11  [ The Good Confession ] But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.

Hebrews 6:12  that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

James 1:3   knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.

James 1:4   But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

Revelation 2:3   and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary.

Revelation 14:12Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.
