Standing on the Promises

Hebrews 10:23

John 16:33     [Jesus said:] These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace.   In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.

Deuteronomy 1:11     May the Lord God of your fathers make you a thousand times more numerous than you are, and bless you as He has promised you!

Deuteronomy 15:6     For the Lord your God will bless you just as He promised you;   you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow; you shall reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over you.

Deuteronomy 26:18     Also today the Lord has proclaimed you to be His special people, just as He promised you, that you should keep all His commandments

Deuteronomy 27:3     You shall write on them all the words of this law, when you have crossed over, that you may enter the land which the Lord your God is giving you, ‘a land flowing with milk and honey,’ just as the Lord God of your fathers promised you.

Joshua 23:10     One man of you shall chase a thousand, for the Lord your God is He who fights for you, as He promised you.

God keeps His Promises

2 Samuel 7:28     And now, O Lord God, You are God, and Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant.

1 Kings 5:12     So the Lord gave Solomon wisdom, as He had promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty together.

1 Kings 8:20     So the Lord has fulfilled His word which He spoke; and I have filled the position of my father David, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised; and I have built a temple for the name of the Lord God of Israel.

1 Kings 8:24     You have kept what You promised Your servant David my father; You have both spoken with Your mouth and fulfilled it with Your hand, as it is this day.

1 Kings 8:56     Blessed be the Lord, who has given rest to His people Israel, according to all that He promised.  There has not failed one word of all His good promise, which He promised through His servant Moses.

2 Chronicles 6:15     You have kept what You promised Your servant David my father; You have both spoken with Your mouth and fulfilled it with Your hand, as it is this day.

Many times in the Psalms David cried out to God from a weary soul.  David was very human and when things seemed dark  and bleak he asked God why.  Still, as a faithful servant David was convinced his trust was not in vain and he called to mind the power of God as encouragement.

Psalm 77     The Consoling Memory of God’s Redemptive Works

I cried out to God with my voice—
To God with my voice;
And He gave ear to me.

In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord;
My hand was stretched out in the night without ceasing;
My soul refused to be comforted.
I remembered God, and was troubled;
I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah

You hold my eyelids open;
I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
I have considered the days of old,
The years of ancient times.

I call to remembrance my song in the night;
I meditate within my heart,
And my spirit makes diligent search.

Will the Lord cast off forever?
And will He be favorable no more?
Has His mercy ceased forever?
Has His promise failed forevermore?
Has God forgotten to be gracious?
Has He in anger shut up His tender mercies? Selah

And I said, “This is my anguish;
But I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High.”
I will remember the works of the Lord;
Surely I will remember Your wonders of old.
I will also meditate on all Your work,
And talk of Your deeds.

Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary;

Who is so great a God as our God?
You are the God who does wonders;
You have declared Your strength among the peoples.
You have with Your arm redeemed Your people,

The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

The waters saw You, O God;
The waters saw You, they were afraid;
The depths also trembled.
The clouds poured out water;
The skies sent out a sound;
Your arrows also flashed about.

The voice of Your thunder was in the whirlwind;
The lightnings lit up the world;
The earth trembled and shook.

Your way was in the sea,
Your path in the great waters,
And Your footsteps were not known.

You led Your people like a flock
By the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Jeremiah 32:42     For thus says the Lord:  Just as I have brought all this great calamity on this people, so I will bring on them all the good that I have promised them.

Jeremiah 33:14     ‘Behold, the days are coming,’ says the Lord, ‘that I will perform that good thing which I have promised to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah’

Acts 2:39     For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.

Romans 4:19-21     And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.   He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.

Romans 15:8     Now I say that Jesus Christ has become a servant to the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made to the fathers

2 Corinthians 1:20     For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.

Galatians 4:28     Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

Ephesians 1:12-14     that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.   In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation;   in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

Hebrews 6:11-15     And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

God’s Infallible Purpose in Christ

For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying,  “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.”   And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

Hebrews 10:23     Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

Hebrews 10:36     For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise

Hebrews 11:11     By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.

James 1:12     [ Loving God Under Trials ]   Blessed is the man who endures temptation;   for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

2 Peter 1:2-8     Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may  participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.   For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;  and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.   For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 3:9     The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is long-suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

1 John 2:25     And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life.

Standing on the Promises

by: Russell K. Carter, pub.1886

Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises I now can see
Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me;
Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
Bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
List’ning every moment to the Spirit’s call,
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God.
