Choosing to Hear and Obey God’s Voice

Joshua 24:24

Joshua 24:14-15   “Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt.   Serve the Lord! And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.

But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua 24:24     And the people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and His voice we will obey!”

Deuteronomy 30:19-20     I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”

Advantages of Hearing and Obeying God’s Voice

Genesis 22:18     In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.

Genesis 26:4-5     And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven;   I will give to your descendants all these lands;   and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;   because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.

Genesis 27:8     Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to what I command you.

Exodus 15:26     [God] said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”

Exodus 24:3     So Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the judgments.   And all the people answered with one voice and said,   “All the words which the Lord has said we will do.”

Deuteronomy 4:29-31     But from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.   When you are in distress, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, when you turn to the Lord your God and obey His voice (for the Lord your God is a merciful God), He will not forsake you nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore to them.

Deuteronomy 13:4     You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him.

Deuteronomy 13:17-18     So none of the accursed things shall remain in your hand, that the Lord may turn from the fierceness of His anger and show you mercy, have compassion on you and multiply you, just as He swore to your fathers, because you have listened to the voice of the Lord your God, to keep all His commandments which I command you today, to do what is right in the eyes of the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 26:17     Today you have proclaimed the Lord to be your God, and that you will walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments, and His judgments, and that you will obey His voice.

Deuteronomy 28:1     [ Blessings on Obedience ] Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth.

Deuteronomy 28:2   And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God:

1 Samuel 12:13-16     Now therefore, here is the king whom you have chosen and whom you have desired.   And take note, the Lord has set a king over you.   If you fear the Lord and serve Him and obey His voice, and do not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then both you and the king who reigns over you will continue following the Lord your God.   However, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then the hand of the Lord will be against you, as it was against your fathers.   Now therefore, stand and see this great thing which the Lord will do before your eyes:

Jeremiah 7:23     But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.’

Jeremiah 26:13     Now therefore, amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the Lord your God; then the Lord will relent concerning the doom that He has pronounced against you.

Jeremiah 38:20     But Jeremiah said, “They shall not deliver you.   Please, obey the voice of the Lord which I speak to you.   So it shall be well with you, and your soul shall live.

Jeremiah 42:6   Whether it is pleasing or displeasing, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we send you, that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.

Joel 3:16     The Lord also will roar from Zion, And utter His voice from Jerusalem; The heavens and earth will shake; But the Lord will be a shelter for His people, And the strength of the children of Israel.

Disadvantages of Refusing to Hear and Obey God’s Voice

Exodus 5:2   And Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, nor will I let Israel go.”

Things didn’t really go so well for Pharaoh and his people after he chose to ignore God.

Deuteronomy 8:20   As the nations which the Lord destroys before you, so you shall perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 28:15     [ Curses on Disobedience ] “But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:

Deuteronomy 28:45     “Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you.

Deuteronomy 28:62 You shall be left few in number, whereas you were as the stars of heaven in multitude, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God.

Numbers 14:21-23     but truly, as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord— because all these men who have seen My glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have put Me to the test now these ten times, and have not heeded My voice, they certainly shall not see the land of which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who rejected Me see it.

Joshua 5:6     For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people who were men of war, who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they did not obey the voice of the Lord—to whom the Lord swore that He would not show them the land which the Lord had sworn to their fathers that He would give us, “a land flowing with milk and honey.”

1 Kings 20:36     Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, surely, as soon as you depart from me, a lion shall kill you.” And as soon as he left him, a lion found him and killed him.
