uplifting thoughts and inspiration on faith

Proverbs 3:5-6

Proverbs 3:5-6   Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.

Guess What's In the God BoxKnowing God’s will is not quite the maze of confusion some make it out to be.  Yes, we do live in a big scary world that offers a lot of choices along with a lot of dead-end roads.  But God is not playing hide and seek. We are not on the game show Guess What’s in the God Box. God is in His heaven sitting on His throne in complete omnipotent sovereign power. When we purposefully set our thoughts on Him and fill our minds with His word He is there waiting for us, ready to have a personal relationship. It is God’s desire to bless His children, give them peace and rest, and lead and guide them.

Jeremiah 29:13     And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

Deuteronomy 30:9-14     And the Lord your God will make you abundantly prosperous in every work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, of your cattle, of your land, for good; for the Lord will again delight in prospering you, as He took delight in your fathers, If you obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this Book of the Law, and if you turn to the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with all your being. For this commandment which I command you this day is not too difficult for you, nor is it far off. It is not [a secret laid up] in heaven, that you should say, Who shall go up for us to heaven and bring it to us, that we may hear and do it? Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, Who shall go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear and do it? But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your mind and in your heart, so that you can do it.

2 Chronicles 15:15   All Judah rejoiced over the oath, for they had sworn it with all their mind. They had sought Him with all their heart, and He was found by them. So the Lord gave them rest on every side.

We can ask God to help us with our thought lives.

1 Chronicles 29:18     O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep forever such purposes and thoughts in the minds of Your people, and direct and establish their hearts toward You.

One way to bring thoughts into alignment with the word of God is to evaluate our thoughts and compare them with what God’s word says.

TRUE:   being in accordance with the actual state or conditions; conforming to reality or fact; not false; real; genuine; authentic; Sincere; not deceitful; firm in allegiance; loyal; faithful; exact; precise; accurate; correct; of the right kind; such as it should be; properly so-called; legitimate; reliable, unfailing, or sure; honest; honorable; upright; not false, fictional, or illusory; factual or factually accurate; correct alignment; unswervingly

Keep in mind that it is TRUE that we live in a flawed world, in a flawed body, surrounded by other flawed people. It is TRUE that bad things happen to good people. It is also TRUE that God is Who He says He Is and that He loves you, cares for you, is watching over you, has good plans for you, will fight for you, and will deliver you.

John 16:33   I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]

Hebrews 11:6     But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Exodus 3:13-14     Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”

And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Isaiah 45:18    For thus says the Lord, Who created the heavens, Who is God, Who formed the earth and made it, Who has established it, Who did not create it in vain, Who formed it to be inhabited:  “I am the Lord, and there is no other.”

Romans 8:37-39     No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 John 4:9-11     In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

1 John 4:7-8     Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

1 Peter 5:6-7     Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

How long will You forget me, O Lord? Forever?
How long will You hide Your face from me?
How long must I lay up cares within me and have sorrow in my heart day after day?
How long shall my enemy exalt himself over me?
Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
lighten the eyes [of my faith to behold Your face in the pitch like darkness],
lest I sleep the sleep of death,
Lest my enemy say, I have prevailed over him,
and those that trouble me rejoice when I am shaken.
But I have trusted, leaned on, and been confident in Your mercy and loving-kindness;
my heart shall rejoice and be in high spirits in Your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me.

Proverbs 3:9     Honor the Lord with your capital and sufficiency [from righteous labors] and with the firstfruits of all your income;

It is human nature, and Satan’s delight, to fall into the trap of thinking more highly of ourselves and our talents than we should. Always remember that prosperity is from God and it is not yours, it is still His. Everything belongs to God. Everything. It may have your name on it, but rest assured, it’s God’s. If you have anything it is because God allowed it. God blesses the righteous but also the wicked. You came into this world with nothing, remind yourself that you will leave with nothing. Any blessing or goodness you have on this earth is from God. God gives good things to His children so that they being blessed can bless others.

Deuteronomy 8:17-18     You may say to yourself, ‘My power and my own ability have gained this wealth for me,’ but remember that the Lord your God gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm His covenant He swore to your fathers, as it is today.

Deuteronomy 9:4     Do not say in your [mind and] heart, after the Lord your God has thrust them out from before you, It is because of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me in to possess this land—whereas it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is dispossessing them before you.

Jeremiah 9:23-24     Thus says the Lord: Let not the wise and skillful person glory and boast in his wisdom and skill; let not the mighty and powerful person glory and boast in his strength and power; let not the person who is rich [in physical gratification and earthly wealth] glory and boast in his [temporal satisfactions and earthly] riches; But let him who glories glory in this: that he understands and knows Me [personally and practically, directly discerning and recognizing My character], that I am the Lord, Who practices loving-kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth, for in these things I delight, says the Lord.

1 Chronicles 29:11-14    Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to You. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom, and You are exalted as head over all. Riches and honor come from You, and You are the ruler of everything. Power and might are in Your hand, and it is in Your hand to make great and to give strength to all. Now therefore, our God, we give You thanks and praise Your glorious name. But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? For everything comes from You, and we have given You only what comes from Your own hand.

Deuteronomy 7:9     Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations

Isaiah 40:31     But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles,They shall run and not be weary,They shall walk and not faint.

GUILTDoes it involve GUILT?

GUILT: a feeling of responsibility or remorse for some offense, crime, wrong, etc., whether real or imagined.
SHAME: the painful feeling arising from the consciousness of something dishonorable, or improper done by oneself; a fact or circumstance bringing disgrace or regret; reproach;
CONDEMNATION: to express strong disapproval of; to demonstrate the guilt of; to judge or pronounce unfit for use; to express an unfavorable or adverse judgment on;

Satan is the accuser, the father of lies, and the deceiver. If you have a thought that has to do with guilt, shame, condemnation, embarrassment, humiliation, disapproval, judgment, fear, feeling unfit,  feeling unloved, feeling diminished, feeling inferior, feeling hurt, feeling demeaned or devalued, GET RID OF IT.  It’s not from God.  If a thought puts obstacles or difficulties in your way impeding progress in your growth in Christ or knowledge of God’s love for you – GET RID OF IT. It’s not from God.

YES, as humans we make mistakes, bad choices, and sometimes we act like we’ve never even heard of God. But God is working in our hearts and minds and in our inner being – the heart and spirit – to change us, perfect us, and complete us in the mirror image of perfection of His son Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5     For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds,[Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One)

Romans 8:1-6   Free from Indwelling Sin
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

2 Corinthians 5:17   Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

2 Corinthians 3:18    And all of us, as with unveiled face, [because we] continued to behold [in the Word of God] as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are constantly being transfigured into His very own image in ever-increasing splendor and from one degree of glory to another; [for this comes] from the Lord [Who is] the Spirit.

Philippians 3:13     Brothers, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead

Hebrews 8:12 For I will be merciful and gracious toward their sins and I will remember their deeds of unrighteousness no more.

Psalm 138:8     The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy and loving-kindness, O Lord, endure forever—forsake not the works of Your own hands.

Philippians 1:6   And I am convinced and sure of this very thing, that He Who began a good work in you will continue until the day of Jesus Christ [right up to the time of His return], developing [that good work] and perfecting and bringing it to full completion in you.

Hebrews 10:22     Let us all come forward and draw near with true (honest and sincere) hearts in unqualified assurance and absolute conviction engendered by faith (by that leaning of the entire human personality on God in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness), having our hearts sprinkled and purified from a guilty (evil) conscience and our bodies cleansed with pure water.

Micah 7:19     He will again have compassion on us; He will subdue and tread underfoot our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.

Isaiah 1:18     Come now, and let us reason together, says the Lord. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be like wool.

1 John 1:9     If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action].

Psalm 103
Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
The Lord executes righteousness
And justice for all who are oppressed.
The Lord is merciful and gracious,
Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.
He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor punished us according to our iniquities.
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;
As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
As a father pities his children,
So the Lord pities those who fear Him.
For He knows our frame;
He remembers that we are dust.
The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting
On those who fear Him,
And His righteousness to children’s children,
To such as keep His covenant,
And to those who remember His commandments to do them.

The top two things we can do to help God help us is to learn His word and to pray. Through familiarity with scripture we gain insight and knowledge into Who God Is and who we are in Him. Through a close personal relationship with Him we are able to talk to God at any time, anywhere.

Prayer is simply talking to God. Prayer doesn’t have to be formal. Prayer  doesn’t have to be fancy. Prayer doesn’t have to be out loud. There are no real rules about prayer other than it should be sincere. Drawing near to God helps us to know what thoughts we should entertain and which ones we should disregard.

Psalm 119:11     Your word have I laid up in my heart, that I might not sin against You.

Psalm 119:105     Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18   Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Romans 8:28   We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.

Matthew 21:22     Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive.

Luke 6:35-38     Love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.  Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.

2 Corinthians 3:17   Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

1 Corinthians 16:13-14     Keep alert, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.

2 Corinthians 1:3-5     Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation, who consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God. For just as the sufferings of Christ are abundant for us, so also our consolation is abundant through Christ.

There are two kinds of temptation. As humans and flawed individuals we are tempted to chase after things that are not beneficial to a Christ centered life.  Greed, fame, lust, jealousy, envy, and selfishness can tempt us to deceive. We are tempted to make material gain and titles our idols. We are tempted to pursue relationships we know in our deepest hearts are not what God wants for us. We are tempted to wallow in self-pity, to blame God and others when we fail, to shirk our duty because we are lazy. These kinds of temptations seem to have no end.

A worse kind of temptation is to tempt God. Tempting God implies doubting His ability to do what He says He will do.

When either kind of temptation wants to live rent free in your mind or vacation in your thoughts evict them immediately before they start to grow roots and take hold. Temptation is dangerous and deadly and does not benefit a child of God in any way.

Matthew 18:7     Woe to the world for such temptations to sin and influences to do wrong! It is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the person on whose account or by whom the temptation comes!

God sent Moses to free the children of Israel from the oppression of Pharaoh. They watched as God sent each plague on the Egyptians but not on them. They were completely aware of the favor God showed them when He sent a spirit over their Egyptian friends to load them down with provisions before they left Egypt. They saw the mighty hand of God part the waters of the Red Sea and their feet walked across on dry land. Then they watched God send the waters crashing down on Pharaoh and his army. Miracle after miracle was right there before their eyes and they turned right around and acted like they had never seen God do anything amazing. They grumbled and complained and basically said, “Yeah, but what have you done for us lately?” They implied that God had led them into the desert and was not able to give them food or water.

Do not doubt God. Do not limit God.

Exodus 17:2     Therefore, the people contended with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said to them, Why do you find fault with me? Why do you tempt the Lord and try His patience?

Exodus 17:7     So he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Deuteronomy 6:16     You shall not tempt and try the Lord your God as you tempted and tried Him in Massah.

Psalm 78:18     And they tempted God in their hearts by asking for food according to their [selfish] desire and appetite.

Psalm 78:41     Yes, again and again they tempted God, And limited the Holy One of Israel.

Psalm 78:56     Yet they tempted and provoked and rebelled against the Most High God and kept not His testimonies.

Psalm 106:14     But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness and tempted and tried to restrain God [with their insistent desires] in the desert.

Matthew 4:7     Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”

1 Timothy 6:9     But those who crave to be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish (useless, godless) and hurtful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction and miserable perishing.

James 1:14     But every person is tempted when he is drawn away, enticed and baited by his own evil desire (lust, passions).

God strengthens His children when they call in Him during times of temptation.

Psalm 68:28    Your God has commanded your strength [your might in His service and impenetrable hardness to temptation]; O God, display Your might and strengthen what You have wrought for us!

Psalm 86:16     O turn to me and have mercy and be gracious to me; grant strength (might and inflexibility to temptation) to Your servant and save the son of Your handmaiden.

Psalm 105:4     Seek, inquire of and for the Lord, and crave Him and His strength (His might and inflexibility to temptation); seek and require His face and His presence [continually] evermore.

Psalm 138:3     In the day when I called, You answered me; and You strengthened me with strength (might and inflexibility to temptation) in my inner self.

Proverbs 5:1-2     My son, be attentive to my Wisdom [godly Wisdom learned by actual and costly experience], and incline your ear to my understanding [of what is becoming and prudent for you], That you may exercise proper discrimination and discretion and your lips may guard and keep knowledge and the wise answer [to temptation].

Matthew 6:13     And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Matthew 26:41     All of you must keep awake (give strict attention, be cautious and active) and watch and pray, that you may not come into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Don’t let temptation derail you in your pursuit of God and all that He has planned for you.

Luke 8:13     But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.

Luke 22:40     When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Luke 22:46     “Why are you sleeping?” He asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation.”

1 Corinthians 10:13     No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape so that you are able to bear it.

Hebrews 2:18     For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.

Hebrews 4:15     For we do not have a High Priest Who is unable to understand and sympathize and have a shared feeling with our weaknesses and infirmities and liability to the assaults of temptation, but One Who has been tempted in every respect as we are, yet without sinning.

James 1:12     Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

James 1:13     Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.

2 Peter 2:9     The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment

Does it STRENGTHEN you?

Thinking about God’s unlimited love and understanding, grace and mercy, forgiveness and salvation should be a bottomless well of strength for His children. As we grow in Christ through the Holy Spirit’s leading we gain confidence and spiritual muscle. We become bold in the Lord and the power of His might.

Joshua 1:9     Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Philippians 4:13     I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

1 Peter 5:6-7     Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Psalm 86:15     But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

Ephesians 6:10-18     In conclusion, be strong in the Lord [be empowered through your union with Him]; draw your strength from Him [that strength which His boundless might provides]. Put on God’s whole armor [the armor of a heavy-armed soldier which God supplies], that you may be able successfully to stand up against [all] the strategies and the deceits of the devil. For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere.

Therefore put on God’s complete armor, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day [of danger], and, having done all [the crisis demands], to stand [firmly in your place].  Stand therefore [hold your ground], having tightened the belt of truth around your loins and having put on the breastplate of integrity and of moral rectitude and right standing with God, And having shod your feet in preparation [to face the enemy with the firm-footed stability, the promptness, and the readiness produced by the good news] of the Gospel of peace.

Lift up over all the [covering] shield of saving faith, upon which you can quench all the flaming missiles of the wicked [one]. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword that the Spirit wields, which is the Word of God. Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty. To that end keep alert and watch with strong purpose and perseverance, interceding in behalf of all the saints (God’s consecrated people).

Exodus 15:2     The Lord is my Strength and my Song, and He has become my Salvation; this is my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God, and I will exalt Him.

2 Chronicles 15:7     Be strong, therefore, and let not your hands be weak and slack, for your work shall be rewarded.

1 Samuel 30:6     David was greatly distressed, for the men spoke of stoning him because the souls of them all were bitterly grieved, each man for his sons and daughters. But David encouraged and strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

Psalm 27:14     Wait and hope for and expect the Lord; be brave and of good courage And He shall strengthen your heart. Yes, wait for and hope for and expect the Lord.

Psalm 28:7     The Lord is my Strength and my [impenetrable] Shield; my heart trusts in, relies on, and confidently leans on Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoices, and with my song will I praise Him.
