Self-Sufficient Self-Existent God

Genesis 21:33

SUFFICIENT: adequate for the purpose; enough to meet a need or purpose; adequate
SELF-EXISTENT: existing independently of any cause, as God; having an independent existence; existing independently of any other being or cause
INDEPENDENT: not influenced or controlled by others; thinking or acting for oneself; not subject to another’s authority or jurisdiction; autonomous; free; not dependent; not depending or contingent upon something else for existence; not relying on another or others for aid or support; unconstrained;
EXISTENT: existing; having existence; living; to have actual being; be; to have life or animation; live; to continue to be or live; to be living; to be actual rather than merely possible; to have contingent being while free, responsible, and aware of one’s situation
ETERNAL: without beginning or end; lasting forever; always existing (opposed to temporal ); perpetual; ceaseless; endless; enduring; immutable; existing outside all relations of time; not subject to change; the Eternal, God.

El Shaddai – The All Sufficient God

Genesis 17:1   When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, I am El Shaddai [Almighty God]. Walk before me and be perfect.”

Genesis 21:33  Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and called there on the name of the Lord, the Eternal God.

God is sufficient enough to be called I AM.  God is I AM.  Not I need.  Not I want.  Not I wish.  Not Maybe one day.  Not For a little while.  God just IS.  Past, present, and future.

Exodus 3:13-14   And Moses said to God, Behold, when I come to the Israelites and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they say to me, What is His name? What shall I say to them?

And God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM and WHAT I AM, and I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE; and He said, You shall say this to the Israelites:  I AM has sent me to you!

God is sufficient.  This means God is enough all by Himself.  God exists and is sustained before us, after us, and independent of us.  God does not need us.  God does not rely on us.  God is without beginning or end. God is forever and always, perpetual, ceaseless, and enduring.  God exists outside of all relations to time. God does not change.

Deuteronomy 32:40  For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live forever.

Job 12
Then Job answered, No doubt you are the [only wise] people [in the world], and wisdom will die with you!
But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know such things as these [of God’s wisdom and might]?

I am become one who is a laughingstock to his friend; I, one whom God answered when he called upon Him — a just, upright (blameless) man—laughed to scorn!  In the thought of him who is at ease there is contempt for misfortune — but it is ready for those whose feet slip.  The dwellings of robbers prosper; those who provoke God are [apparently] secure; God supplies them abundantly [who have no god but their own hands and power].

For ask now the animals, and they will teach you [that God does not deal with His creatures according to their character]; ask the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth [with its other forms of life], and it will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare [this truth] to you.

Who [is so blind as] not to recognize in all these [that good and evil are promiscuously scattered throughout nature and human life] that it is God’s hand which does it [and God’s way]?

In His hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.

Is it not the task of the ear to discriminate between [wise and unwise] words, just as the mouth distinguishes [between desirable and undesirable] food?

With the aged [you say] is wisdom, and with length of days comes understanding.  But [only] with [God] are [perfect] wisdom and might; He [alone] has [true] counsel and understanding.

Behold, He tears down, and it cannot be built again; He shuts a man in, and none can open.

He withholds the waters, and the land dries up; again, He sends forth [rains], and they overwhelm the land or transform it.

With Him are might and wisdom; the deceived and the deceiver are His [and in His power].

He leads [great and scheming] counselors away stripped and barefoot and makes the judges fools [in human estimation, by overthrowing their plans].

He looses the fetters [ordered] by kings and has [the] waistcloth [of a slave] bound about their [own] loins.

He leads away priests as spoil, and men firmly seated He overturns.

He deprives of speech those who are trusted and takes away the discernment and discretion of the aged.

He pours contempt on princes and loosens the belt of the strong [disabling them, bringing low the pride of the learned].

He uncovers deep things out of darkness and brings into light black gloom and the shadow of death.

He makes nations great, and He destroys them; He enlarges nations [and then straitens and shrinks them again], and leads them [away captive].

He takes away understanding from the leaders of the people of the land and of the earth, and causes them to wander in a wilderness where there is no path.  They grope in the dark without light, and He makes them to stagger and wander like a drunken man.

God is sufficient enough to possess all that is and to need nothing from anyone.

Psalm 50:9-12    I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine. If I were hungry I would not tell you,for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

Psalm 90:1-2    Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

Psalm 95:1-7
Oh come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;
Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.
For the Lord is the great God,
And the great King above all gods.

In His hand are the deep places of the earth;
The heights of the hills are His also.
The sea is His, for He made it;
And His hands formed the dry land.
Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For He is our God,
And we are the people of His pasture,
And the sheep of His hand.

Psalm 102:25-27    At the beginning You existed and laid the foundations of the earth; the heavens are the work of Your hands.  They shall perish, but You shall remain and endure; yes, all of them shall wear out and become old like a garment. Like clothing You shall change them, and they shall be changed and pass away. But You remain the same, and Your years shall have no end.

Isaiah 40:28-31  Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, does not faint or grow weary; there is no searching of His understanding.

He gives power to the faint and weary, and to him who has no might He increases strength [causing it to multiply and making it to abound].  Even youths shall faint and be weary, and [selected] young men shall feebly stumble and fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] shall change and renew their strength and power; they shall lift their wings and mount up [close to God] as eagles [mount up to the sun]; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint or become tired.

God is with us always, eternally, from everlasting to everlasting.

Matthew 28:18-20    Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

God is not only His own source but as creator He sustains His children as well.

John 1:3    All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being.

John 5:26    For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

Acts 17:23-25    For as I passed along and carefully observed your objects of worship, I came also upon an altar with this inscription, To the unknown god. Now what you are already worshiping as unknown, this I set forth to you. The God Who produced and formed the world and all things in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in handmade shrines. Neither is He served by human hands, as though He lacked anything, for it is He Himself Who gives life and breath and all things to all [people].

2 Corinthians 3:5    not that we are sufficient of ourselves, to account anything as from ourselves; but our sufficiency is from God;

2 Corinthians 12:9-10    And he hath said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my power is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Wherefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

Colossians 1:15-20     [Now] He is the exact likeness of the unseen God [the visible representation of the invisible]; He is the Firstborn of all creation. For it was in Him that all things were created, in heaven and on earth, things seen and things unseen, whether thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him [by His service, intervention] and in and for Him. And He Himself existed before all things, and in Him all things consist (cohere, are held together).

He also is the Head of [His] body, the church; seeing He is the Beginning, the Firstborn from among the dead, so that He alone in everything and in every respect might occupy the chief place [stand first and be preeminent]. For it has pleased [the Father] that all the divine fullness (the sum total of the divine perfection, powers, and attributes) should dwell in Him permanently. And God purposed that through (by the service, the intervention of) Him [the Son] all things should be completely reconciled back to Himself, whether on earth or in heaven, as through Him, [the Father] made peace by means of the blood of His cross.

Eternal God, the God of no beginning and no end, will never cease.

1 Timothy 6:16    Who alone has immortality [in the sense of exemption from every kind of death] and lives in unapproachable light, Whom no man has ever seen or can see. Unto Him be honor and everlasting power and dominion. Amen (so be it).

Almighty God, in His supreme power and infinite knowledge, creator, possessor and giver of life, is our only source of salvation and eternity.

Hebrews 7:25    Therefore He is able also to save to the uttermost (completely, perfectly, finally, and for all time and eternity) those who come to God through Him, since He is always living to make petition to God and intercede with Him and intervene for them.

Eternal God never changes.

James 1:17   Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
